Thailand travel pictures: Pattaya, Koh Tao, Isaan, Vietnam and more
Having lived in Thailand for almost ten years now, I decided it was time to put together a site of Thailand travel pictures. You may find interesting. It certainly gives you a graphic idea of what to expect and probably can enhance your travel ideas. Pattaya is a great place to take in the night life and learn the basics of diving. Some of the best wrecks around Koh Tao is a destination about 8 hours south of Bangkok, maybe more. There is a two hour high speed ferry to this small diving mecca which you take from Surat Thani. . You will find a destination almost exclusively dedicated to scuba diving and related activity. I’d say the diving can be some of the best experience–and plenty of nighttime choices as well. Overall it is the best situation if you want to spend a long time diving–I mean A LONG TIME. On Koh Tao some people make a career of diving and it is possible to make a living there. It is also very much international youth oriented–the nightlife is more youth oriented–and attracts Europeans. When I was there, South Americans seemed to be there in large numbers, particularly from Chile.
Living cheap in Koh Tao
You might be able to live for as cheap as 400 dollars a month on Koh Tao. No frills bungalows can be rented, or houses which have all the amenities you desire–but the price can increase sharply for luxury. In the morning everyone is off to the dive schools. The day can start as early as 8:30 AM. You can also learn to free dive here. If you don’t know what that is, it is diving on one breath with no breathing apparatus. They are trained thru visualisation to hold their breath for longer periods of time, like 2 or 3 minutes. So too the body metabolism slows with cool water. I’m told the world record is 22 minutes on one breath. Thing about it. Koh Tao is a party island, but you need to stay safe. Enough said.
Marine Life Abounds
At certain times there are large whales swimming around and they seem to like human company; other times you find yourself swimming in a school of chevron barracuda, as I did once. Marine life abounds here. I was down about 30 feet and I looked over to the left, seeing this school of fish kind of closing in on me, I swam to the right–then I looked over and there was another school of chevron barracuda closing in on the left…Was I going to be their meal? I am not sure but I am told that they don’t feed in schools. At any rate, I decided to surface. Koh Tao
Pattaya Wreck Diving
Pattaya wreck diving with the various dive schools around is another option. If you want a more active social life and particularly if you are single, there is no problem here with companions! The wrecks are usually about 30 meters or less down–that’s 100 feet, with extensions of the ships sometimes reaching another 14 meters off the bottom. So you can swim around and gently move up towards the captain’s wheelhouse and ascend from there. Sometimes there is a strong current around the ships, so one has to be careful to stay in close proximity to the wrecks. The key here which all dive schools stress is safety. Massive Hand Carved Temple of Teak
If your looking for a more relaxed day while on your Thailand travel adventure, take the elephant ride to the Sanctuary of Truth. The massive temple hand carved from teak, gives you an visual and spectacular education about Asian spiritual beliefs. But don’t forget to take the guided tour. Prior to the establishment of Siam, which was the precursor to Thailand, there was the Khemer kingdom or empire. Speaking of which–Ankor Wat is about a day’s drive from Pattaya, Teak Carvings Ayuddhaya
Isaan and Vientiane
If you think there is nothing to do in Isaan you are mistaken! Before the rainy season there is a parade-rocket festival with a surprisingly large population of attendees. Vientiane is just a few hours away, and offers you an extraordinary experience. Places almost untouched by the modern age. In Mukdahan, Isaan, the rocket festival offers you the opportunity to witness the ingenuity of Thai boys and young men who are expert at building home-made rockets. They shoot almost out of the planetary orbit or so it seems! And Vientiane is a short ride away.
Speaking of Vientiane, if you are looking for an absolutely awesome five day journey, you absolutely must visit this place. Journeying to the northeastern Thailand in your Thailand travels requires abit more detective work for outstanding cultural destinations. But rest assured, they are there. I suggest a tour service, carefully planned, which will allow you to take in some of the most pristine. You can access Vientiane through Mukdahan, Thailand and get a taxi direct to Vientiane. Believe it or not, the Mekong produces more fish than the entire Mediterranean.
There’s more to come but I will let you look around. I hope you like what you see. Thailand travel is an adventure that will leave an indelible mark on your heart.
